CP Flea | A DCC Capstone

OBJECTIVE

The DCC Capstone Project is the culmination of 2 years of work in the living-learning program. Students will envision a sophisticated Capstone Project that not only engages this curriculum, but also resonates with their own personal, academic, and/or professional interests. They work with program staff to craft a compelling proposal—similar to any proposal that they would write for a professional research grant or other funding opportunity—for their Capstone. Finally, students spend a semester implementing, testing, and revising their ideas. In building their own unique Capstone project, students learn to think outside disciplinary boundaries, take creative risks, and approach problems from multiple perspectives.

ABSTRACT

CP Flea is a pop-up outdoor flea market showcasing various student-run small businesses selling vintage and handmade goods to promote sustainable shopping. The fashion industry accounts for an astonishing 10% of carbon emissions and is one of the biggest polluters in the world. CP Flea encourages college students to shop purposefully while discouraging the “disposable” mentality so prevalent in the world of fast fashion. A portion of all sales proceeds will be donated to Remake, a nonprofit organization that advocates for fair pay and climate justice in the clothing industry.

CHALLENGES

I wanted to create a Capstone that not only reached but deeply resonated with my peers and fellow students. Recognizing the effectiveness of social media, I determined it to be the strongest strategy for promoting and marketing CP Flea. My goal was to align the project with my personal passions and ensure its potential for a lasting impact.

LOGO

I crafted multiple versions of the CP Flea logo before arriving at the final design. I recognized the importance of the logo as the focal point for all future designs and promotional materials and as the primary element of the Instagram. The final iteration drew inspiration from retro line art, incorporating a vibrant array of colors, and emphasized the creation of organic shapes and lines.
